For most of my life I never paid attention to what was happening within our government. I did not know and I did not care whether I would have been considered to be a conservative or a liberal. Yes, I was that complacent. It’s not clear whether my interest in politics and our government’s mechanizations grew because of my own maturity or because I started to see that my friends and family were getting angry about the “State of the Union”, and, more importantly, getting angry with each other - me included. The 9-11 attacks were also a wake up call for me. At the time, I remember feeling intensely afraid that it was possible that the United States might come under constant attack and we could all lose our freedom, our property, and our country, not to mention our lives. In short, we could lose our way of life because some stranger from a strange land might take it all away. The presidential elections and presidential performances started to interest me and with that newfound curiosity, I realized that I had little to no knowledge of how our government, our elected officials, or even our elections were actually supposed to work. Clearly, I am no political pundit. I am an average citizen who realized that I had very little understanding of how we got here and what’s at stake. Since I began this endeavor I’ve learned a tremendous amount about our country’s history and our present day situation and I have a much better understanding of our government and the views of others. More importantly, I have learned that we are perilously close to the edge of the cliff – not for the first time in our country’s history, mind you – but just as critical. We are now facing threats not just from 9-11 type terrorists, but also from our own homegrown enemies as well. It is my hope that this blog will serve as a tool to share with you what I’ve learned with the ultimate goal being that we gain a better understanding of each other, our roots and our future. It is my sincere belief that this can be achieved through an honest and open conversation with you, our neighbors; just a simple chat over our backyard fences, if you will. I hope you will join in on our chat. My promise to you is that the discussions will be led without anger, without malice, without impatience and without impertinence. Respectfully yours,Hamilton
